May Poem by Briana

Daily Opener:
- Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
- Calendar {Click
on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
- ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}.
Description: Your child will learn words that rhyme with May and create a
poem.
Materials:

White piece of paper {cut into four sentence strips}
·
Four index cards
·
Sharpe
Directions:
- Using the white paper cut four strips {landscape
style} to create sentence strips for the poem.
- Write the following words below on each individual
strip in order:
- Strip 1: This month it is _______,
- Strip 2: We are on our ________,
- Strip 3: To go outside and ________,
- Strip 4: It is such a beautiful ________.
- On each index card write the follow words:
- May
- Way
- Play
- Day
- Lay out the four sentence strips {in order}. Lay the four index cards below the
strips.
- Discuss each index card word to your child:
- Explain how each word rhymes using the –ay
chunk.
- Discuss the meaning of each word.
- Spell out each word.
- Now, read the sentence strips with your child and
have them fill in the blank with the correct rhyming word.
- Continue until all sentences are filled in correctly.
- Be sure to praise your child as they work on this
activity with you.
- When finished, read the May Poem out loud together {this will replace the read aloud for the day}.
Learning Opportunity :
- Your child will learn
new words that rhyme with the word “May.”
- Your child will practice reading and spelling.
- Your child will gain confidence while completing the activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:
This poem activity was a great lesson for
Stallone today. He enjoyed learning the
new words that rhyme with “May” using the –ay chunk. He had fun practicing his reading skills by
reading each sentence strip. He was so
excited when he matched the correct word to fill in the poem. When he was finished, he enjoyed reading the
poem out loud with me. This is a great
lesson outline that you can apply to any poem you would like your child to
practice.
