{Week 1: Sorting}

                                   Activity: Fall Leaves

Daily Opener:

3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description: Your child will practice sorting Fall leaves by putting them in the matching colored baskets.

Materials:

• Orange, Yellow, Green, & Brown Construction Paper & Crayons
• White Paper
• Black Marker
• Pen
• Scissors

Directions:

1. Fold white paper into four even squares, draw a basket-like picture, and cut out {See image below}.

2. Place all colored construction paper on top of each other, draw a few leaves, and cut out leaves {See image below}.

3. With child color baskets, you should have: one orange, one yellow, one green, and one brown colored basket.

4.  Sorting. Place all four baskets and leaves in front of child, have him/her sort the leaves by putting each colored leaf in the matching colored basket.

5. When finished, review the word SORT with your child and praise them for a job well done. Sorting is very common in elementary math classes. Happy sorting!!

2.            Your child will take part in a sorting activity to help better understand the concept.

{Week 2: Size/Sorting}

Activity: Patriotic Stars

Theme: Patriotic Days         Color: Blue

Daily Opener:

3.     ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will learn how to size/sort stars using our nation’s colors.

Materials:

• Red, White, and Blue Construction Paper
• Pen
• Scissors

Directions:

1. Using each color, cut out two large, medium, and small stars for a total of 18 stars.

2.  Cut out 3 word strips. On one side of the three, write the words: SMALL, MEDIUM, and LARGE. On the other side, write the words: RED, WHITE, and BLUE.

3. Sorting. With your child place all the stars in a pile in front of them with the word strips: RED, WHITE, and BLUE above the pile. Together, have your child sort the colors into the proper categories. Place all the red stars next to the RED strip, all the white stars next to the WHITE strip and so on.

4.  Sizing. Place all the stars in a pile in front of your child, turn over strips so they read: SMALL, MEDIUM, and LARGE. Demonstrate what a small, medium, and large star look like placing it next to the proper strips. Lastly, have your child size the remaining stars to their proper areas. Praise your child as they complete the activity, keeping their confidence and endurance up!

5.Review the lesson with your child, doing steps 3 and 4 over again! End the lesson pointing out that “stars” and the colors, “red, white, and blue” are symbolic for your country, The United States of America!

1.             Your child will practice sizing and sorting.

2.            Your child will learn the importance of “stars” and our country’s “colors.”

3.            Your child will gain confidence in participating in this activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved: Stallone loves sorting and sizing, though sizing is a little more difficult, especially the "medium" stars... that's is a new concept for him. I also had him name all the letters in the words, which was a breeze for him, and read the word. It was a challenging lesson for him, but he caught on towards the end. We will definitely be doing this lesson again in the next few days! :)

{Week 3: Size/Sorting}

Activity: Big or Small

Theme: Summer Days    Color: Yellow

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will size and sort “big” and “little” items to help them develop the difference of the two.

Materials:

• Five Small and Five Big items from child's toy collection
• Two large bowls
• White Paper
• Sharpie
• Tape

Directions:

1. Cut paper in half, on one piece write the word BIG and SMALL on the other piece. Tape one piece on one bowl and the other one the other bowl.
2. Explain and give examples of BIG and Small.
3. Scatter BIG and SMALL items in front of your child, have them size and sort through them placing all the BIG items in the BIG bowl and all the SMALL items in the SMALL bowl.
4. Line up all the BIG and SMALL items in a straight line, have your child point to one item at a time identifying if it is a BIG or SMALL item.
5. Repeat #3, praise your child for all that they accomplished today!

Learning Opportunity: 

1.             Your child will practice sizing and sorting BIG and SMALL items.

2.            Your child will understand the concepts of BIG and SMALL.

3.            Your child will gain confidence participating in this activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved: Stallone loved learning about the "big" and "small" today. Sorting and naming his toys brought a lot of joy to him as well! We even practiced spelling the words by having him trace each letter of "big" and "small." We definitely look forward to doing activities like this in the future, what an inexpensive way to teach your child a size/sorting lesson by simply using items from their room. :)

{Week 3: Sorting}

Activity: Colorful Sorting

Theme: Blooming Days    Color: Purple

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will learn how to sort various colorful triangles into their proper families. 

Materials:

• Construction Paper
• Muffin Tin
• Scissors
• Sharpie

Directions:

1. Choose 4-5 colors to work with. With those colors cut one circle for each color, big enough to fit at the bottom of a muffin tin out of construction paper.
2. Cut out 5 triangles per color.
3. Write the names of the colors on five homemade word strips.
4. Read aloud each word strip and have child trace each letter of the colors with their index finger.
5. Place all triangles into a pile next to the muffin tray, have child sort all the colors together by placing all the triangles in its’ correct matching muffin tin. {You may have to only concentrate on 2 or 3 colors at a time, depending on your child’s knowledge. Happy sorting!!

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  What a fantastic activity! Stallone loved sorting the triangles. He sorted all the colors together, I learned I could of definitely added a few more colors. Great sorting activity!

{Week 5: Size/Sorting}

Activity: Flower Sorting by Briana

Theme: Saint Patrick’s Day          Color: Green

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will learn to sort different kinds of flowers from a nature walk.

Materials:

·         Basket or container {for nature walk}

·         Flowers/blossoms {variety of sizes and colors}

·         Seven index cards

·         Pen

Directions:

1. Using an index card write the word Flower.  Explain that you and your child will be going on a nature walk and need to find different sizes and colors of flowers to bring home.
1. Using your basket, go on a nature walk and find some great flowers...have fun!
2. When you return set the flower basket on a table.
3. Using three separate index cards write the words: Small / Medium / Large.
4. Take a look at the colors of flowers you found and pick three colors to write on separate index cards {This will vary depending on the colors you found.}
1. Example:  White / Yellow / Purple
5. Next, spread out the six cards on the table.
6. Have your child sort the flowers out and arrange them in the correct category. 
7. When finished, have your child talk about how they sorted the flowers.
1. Example:  Where did you put the yellow flower?  Which flower is small?  Which flower is large? Etc. 

Learning Opportunity: 

1. Your child will practice sorting different items into the correct category.
2. Your child will learn the difference between objects that are small, medium, and large.
3. Your child will learn how to observe the environment around them.

*Stallone Tested and Approved: Stallone loved completing the lesson today.  He had a wonderful time walking outside in the beautiful spring weather.  He really enjoyed finding flowers along the way.  We found a lot of yellow, white, and purple flowers on our nature walk.  He liked figuring out how to sort the flowers when we got home.  This is a great lesson to practice size and sorting!
