{Week 2: Opposites}

Activity: Float or Sink

Daily Opener:

3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will learn the opposite of floating and sinking.

Materials:

Large Bucket or Pot

Water

Floatable and Sinkable Objects

Piece of Computer Paper

Marker

Directions:

1. On the blank piece of paper, write the words FLOAT or SINK at the top of the paper. Then, draw a line down the center of the paper. On the left side write down all the names of the objects going to be tested and on the right side you’ll write the word FLOAT or SINK next to the objects after it is tested.

2. Fill bucket or pot half way full of water, one at a time ask your child if he thinks the object will float or sink? Then have them drop the object in the water to see what it does, be sure to write in the results on your FLOAT or SINK piece of paper.

3. Once finished, go over results with your child. Allow them to try the experiment one more time, you could even test them to see if they remember what each object will do in the water.

4.  Be sure to praise your child for all the hard work he has done while participating in this fun summer opposite lesson!

Learning Opportunity: 

1.             Your child will practice learn the opposite of floating and sinking.

2.            Your child will learn what of objects that float and sink.

3.            Your child will gain confidence in participating in this activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Fun, fun, fun summer activity! What great activity to do in the pool too, next time for us! LOL Stallone loved guessing if the objects were going to float or going to sink, and oh yes..learning the "opposite" of float is to sink! Great new concept! We also had a great time at the end, as Mommy tested him to see if he could remember what items floated and what items sunk. He did well, only missing two! I'm a very proud Mommy! Loved this activity!

{Week 3: Opposites}

Activity: Black and White Collage

Theme: Blooming Days    Color: Purple

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will learn the meaning of "opposites" while making a black and white collage.

Materials:

• Grey or Red Construction Paper
• Black and White Items {Items that can be glued to the paper}
• Glue
• Sharpie

Directions:


1.  Fold a piece of grey {or red} construction paper in half. On one side write BLACK and on the other side write WHITE
2.  Explain to your child that you will be discussing the “opposite” of BLACK is WHITE, and that you will be sorting out black and white items into piles.
3.  Once all items are sorted out, have your child glue all the black items on the BLACK side and all the white items on the WHITE side. 
4.  Review the finished collage, pointing out all of the opposite items.
5.  Hang collage up and reflect on it throughout the week! Don’t forget to praise your little one for all the hard work they accomplished doing this lesson!

Learning Opportunity:

1. Your child will learn the meaning of “opposite.”
2. Your child will practice sorting opposite items.
3. Your child will create a collage using opposite black and white items.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone enjoyed sorting the opposite color's of Black and White. He loved gluing them on the paper, especially the numbers. What a great and simple activity that you can do while introducing opposite colors! We will definitely do this one again!

{Week 3: Opposites}

Activity: Inkblot Easter Egg

Lesson by Annie

Theme: Easter     Color: Gray

Daily Opener:  

1.             Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}

3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will learn how to create an opposite pair while designing a colorful Easter egg.

Materials:

• A piece of construction paper
• Assortment of finger paints
• Sharpie
• Scissors

Directions:

1.              Fold your piece of construction paper in half, taco style {vertically}.

2.             Open fold, draw an egg on the paper, this egg should take up the entire paper 

3.             Painting time! Fold paper back, and have your child paint one side of the folded piece. The more paint the better!

4.            When painting is done, immediately open fold and fold over again once more, so dry fold will fold directly over the painted fold.

5.             Open fold, and you should have created an opposite pair. Explain to your child what an opposite pair means.

6.            Let dry, then cut out your Easter egg! Hang up for your child to enjoy for the days to come!

Learning Opportunity: 

1.             Your child will practice painting with a brush or fingers.

2.            Your child will learn how to create an opposite pair.

3.            Your child will learn how to make an Easter egg using paints.

Materials Needed

Fold paper in half

Draw a large egg

Prepare the paint

Fold in half, have child paint one half of the egg

Having fun painting!

Once painting is finished, fold painted side over non painted side and then open, you're child has created opposite pairs.

Let dry, and cut out egg template and WaaaLaaa!

{Week 5: Opposites}

Activity: Day and Night by Briana

Theme: Saint Patrick’s Day          Color: Green

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will learn the differences between day and night.

Materials:

·         1 light blue construction paper

·         1 black construction paper

·         1 white construction paper

·         scissors

·         crayons

·         Tape

·         Pen

Directions:

1. Prep:
1. Place blue & black paper on the table.
2. Write the word “DAY” on the blue paper and “NIGHT” on the black paper.
3. Cut the white paper into 8 squares.
4. Draw a sun on one square, a moon on another square, four stars on another square, a bed on another square, and a child playing on another square.  Using the crayons to color in each picture.
2. Lay out the pictures next to the DAY and NIGHT pieces of paper.
3. Explain to your child the differences between day and night & ask them questions along the way:
1. During the day we work and play.  During the night we sleep.
2. What do you see in the sky in the day? {Sun} At night? {Moon & Stars}
3. What color is the sky during the day {Blue} Etc.
4. Have your child tape the pictures on the correct paper {either DAY or NIGHT}.
5. When you are finished, ask your child to describe what they see on the DAY paper, and what they see on the NIGHT paper.  This will help them see the difference between the two.  
6. Place the finished pictures on a wall in your house so your child can show what they have done. 

Learning Opportunity: 

1. Your child will learn how to recognize and spell new words to add to their vocabulary.
2. Your child will learn the difference between day and night.
3. Your child will gain confidence by completing the activity.

Daily Opener:

Activity:  Memory Game: Opposites {Lesson by Annie} 

Description: Children will practice memorizing cards while learning basic “opposite” methods.

Materials:

-    Construction paper

-       Sharpe or pen

-       Markers/crayons

-       Scissors

Directions:

     1.     Cut out ten small cards, using construction paper, use all the same color.

         * Plain white computer paper  or index cards would work too.

2. Write the following “opposites,” one word per card: HOT, COLD, TALL, SHORT, HAPPY, SAD, BIG, SMALL, WALK, and RUN.
3. Draw a simple picture to represent each word next to the site word.
4. Go over the cards with the child, pairing each opposite together.
5. Turn cards over and spread them out on a surface, keeping them close together.
6. With your child, play the game, “Memory.” As your child turns over a card say the word, and its opposite. Allow your child to try to find its “opposite. If the card is not found, turn both cards over, and allow the next player to play the game.
7. When a pair is found, set them aside. When the game is over, play again. At the end of the activity, go over all opposites with child once more.
8. Enjoy your handmade Memory game!!

-Your child will learn the meaning of the word, opposite.

-Your child will learn various opposite words, while learning the game of Memory.

-Your child will practice concentrating, listening and following directions while playing the game.

-Your child will gain confidence while taking part in the fun Memory game.
