{Week 4: Music}

                       Activity: Painting with Music

Daily Opener:  

1.             Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}

2.            Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.

3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will practice painting to music by stroking their paintbrush to the tempo of the music.

Materials:

• CD Player {with child’s favorite music}
• Construction Paper
• Paint
• Paintbrush

Directions:

1. Turn on your child’s favorite song, together listen to the music. Talk about the “tempo” of the song, is it slow, medium, or fast?

2. Using construction paper, paint, paintbrush, and the music have with your child practice painting to the “tempo.” If it’s a “fast” tempo move the brush quickly, if it’s “slow” move the brush slowly and so on.

3. On their own. Have your child practice painting to the tempo, they may still need your guidance.

4.  Have fun with the activity, use various colors to make a colorful art piece!

*Opitional: You could have your child stand up and move to the music at the end. Moving slow, medium, or fast depending on the tempo of your song!

Learning Opportunity: 

1.             Your child will learn the “tempo” of a song.

2.            Your child will practice painting to the “tempo” of the song.

3.            Your child will gain confidence in participating in this activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved: We love music in this household! Stallone had a hard time not dancing while doing this activity. I did help him as the song played and we moved the brush to the tempo, he got a quick out of that! H e did catch on towards the end and had a great time! Fun activity!

Activity: Days of the Week

Theme: Summer Days    Color: Yellow

Daily Opener:

3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will learn a song that teaches the days of the week.

Materials:

• Computer Paper
• Scissors
• Sharpe
• Your Voice/Your Enthusiasm

Directions:

1. Explain to your child that they will learn and practice a song that teaches the days of the week.

2. Cut out seven word strips from your computer paper, and write out the days of the week, one day per strip.

3. With your child, go over the days of the week, starting with Monday through Sunday. Distinguish the difference between “weekdays” and “weekends.” Talk about what days are school days and workdays.

4. Lay out days in order infront of your child and sing the song below:

{To help children learn the days of the week in order, sing to the tune of "If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands..."}

3.            Your child will participate in a song while singing and clapping to the days of the week.

*Stallone Tested and Approved: Singing, singing, and more singing! My son made Mommy sing through the entire week..which was great! What a fun Friday morning starter! We will definitely be singing this song again and again! I was really proud of Stallone for knowing most days, for I felt like our morning calendar practice has paid off! Yay, for CM!

Activity: Homemade Chimes

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will learn how to make a musical instrument called chimes, while learning how to play it to music.

Materials:

• Ruler or Stick
• Washers
• String
• Mixing Spoon

Directions:

1. Hang the washers from the ruler or stick with pieces of string by wrapping the string around the ruler or stick and securing.

2. Strike the washers with the mixing spoon to play.

3. Have your child strike the chimes lightly then harder to hear the difference in the tempo.

4. Play or sing a song of your choice, and have your child practice hitting the chimes to the melody of the song.

 Learning Opportunity: 

1.             Your child will learn how to make the musical instrument, chimes.

2.            Your child will learn how to play the chimes.

3.            Your child will learn the different tempos to the chimes.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone loved making and playing the chimes. He loved getting into Daddy's tool chest in search of the washers. Music is definitely a plus for my little boy, he dances all around hitting his chimes, sometimes a little too hard. Lol. Great Friday musical activity!!

Activity: Flower Drum

Theme: Blooming Days    Color: Purple

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will learn how to make and play a homemade drum while decorating it in blooming flowers.

Materials:

• Empty Oatmeal Container
• Construction paper
• Tempura Paint
• Markers

Directions:

1. Glue your choice of color construction paper over the outside of oatmeal container and on lid.
2. Using the paints, show your child how to make a fingerprint flower {see image below} on the drum. Make as many as their heart desires!
3. While paint is drying, write your child's name on the lid of the drum.
4.  Once flowers are dry, write the word DRUM along the side of your finished piece
5.  Show you child how to hit the drum creating rhythm while singing their favorite song!

Learning Opportunity: 

1.             Your child will learn how to create a homemade drum and create finger flowers.

2.            Your child will learn how to properly hold and hit the drum.

3.            Your child will learn rhythm while hitting the drum to their favorite song.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone got a little messy making his blooming flowers. He made a few flowers, but then decided he wanted his handprints all over the drum. What a fun activity, he loved hitting the drum to the music, he will definitely be playing with this drum for awhile!!

{Dab finger in flower making pedals first, then dab in a yellow center}

Activity: Egg Shakers

Description:  Your child will learn how to make their very own Egg Shakers.

Materials:

• Two Plastic Eggs
• Four Pennies
• Super glue
• The song, Shake your Sillies Out 

Directions:

1.              Put two pennies in each egg.

2.             Super glue the eggs shut.

3.             Let them dry for a few minutes.

4.            Play the song, Shake my Sillies Out, you can find it on YouTube.

5.             Repeat song, teach your child how to move the shakers to the song creating “rhythm.”

6.            Enjoy your new Easter Shakers! Have a Happy Easter Everyone!!

Learning Opportunity: 

1.             Your child will learn how to make homemade shakers.

2.            Your child will learn how to move to the music while shaking the eggs.

3.            Your child will learn Rhythm using a musical instrument.
