Kid’s Corner

{Week 2: Rhymes}

Activity: -an word family by Briana

Theme: Fall Days         Color: Orange

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
  2. Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}.

Description:  Your child will learn how to rhyme words with the –an word family.

Materials:
·         Green, Red, Orange, and Yellow Construction Paper
·         White Paper {Cut into six small squares}
·         Scissors
·         Black Marker

Directions:
  1. Draw a leaf onto the construction paper. 
  2. Cut out six leaves to use for the lesson.
  3. Cut six small squares out of white paper to fit onto leaves.
  4. Write the word family __an onto all six leaves.
  5. Write the letters /r/f/p/m/t/c on the white squares.
  6. Place the leaves and letters onto the table for your child to use.
  7. Have your child place a letter onto a leaf to create a rhyming word.
  8. For each leaf, define each word and use it in a sentence for your child to learn.
  9. Once all the letters are onto the leaves, have your child say each word.
  10. When finished, praise your child for a job well done!

Learning Opportunity
  1. Your child will learn how to rhyme words with the –an word family.
  2. Your child will learn new words while completing the activity.
  3. Your child will gain confidence while completing the activity.

Read Aloud:  
Fall {By Briana}

Fall is almost here,
The weather will change,
It will be windy and chilly,

Fall is almost here,
The leaves will turn colors,
To yellow, orange, and red,

Fall is almost here,
There will be hot chocolate to sip,
And pumpkins all around,

Fall is almost here,
It will be so pretty,
I can’t wait!

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone really likes learning new words.  He really liked this lesson today.  He had a blast placing the letters onto the leaves to create new rhyming words.  After the activity, he was saying the words throughout the afternoon.  We had a great time with the lesson today!

Draw a leaf then stack paper and cut-out.
Have your child place each letter onto a leaf to create a rhyming word.

Kid’s Corner

{Week 3: Rhymes}

Activity: Flag Rhymes by Briana

Theme: Patriotic Days         Color: Blue

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
  2. Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}.
Description:  Your child will learn words that rhyme with “flag” by using the –ag chunk.

Materials:
·         Red, White, and Blue Construction Paper
·         Scissors
·         Pen
·         Tape or Glue {not pictured}

Directions:
  1. Cut a rectangle out of the blue construction paper.  
  2. Cut four long strips out of the red construction paper.
  3. Write “__ag” on the blue rectangle, and the four strips of red paper. 
  4. Next, write in the letters “Fl” onto the blue rectangle.  Tell your child that they will learn new words that rhyme with “flag” which are apart of the –ag chunk.
  5. Write in each new word one at a time on the red strips:
    1. Bag
    2. Rag
    3. Tag
    4. Wag
  6. Then, have your child spell each word and use each word in a sentence.   
  7. Have your child arrange the blue rectangle and red strips of paper onto the white paper to make an American flag.  Glue or tape the pieces in place. 
  8. Have your child talk about what they made.
  9. When finished, display your child’s finished Flag Rhymes in the home to show the family!
Learning Opportunity
  1. Your child will learn words that rhyme with “flag.”
  2. Your child will practice spelling and creating sentences.
  3. Your child will gain confidence while completing the activity.
Read Aloud:  
American Flag {By Briana}

The American flag is red,
The American flag is white,
The American flag is also blue,

The American flag has stars,
The American flag has stripes,
The American flag represents me and you!

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Today’s rhyming activity was fun and patriotic.  Stallone liked learning the new words that rhyme with “flag.”  He loved the word “wag” as he would point to our dog’s tails and say “wag.”  It was too cute!  He liked arranging the red strips of paper and making the American Flag.  This is a great lesson, as it helps teach new words and allows your child to practice their rhyming skills.

Kid’s Corner

{Week 4: Rhymes}

Activity: The Sun by Briana

Theme: Blooming Days         Color: Purple

Daily Opener:  
1.       Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
2.      Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will learn how to make words that rhyme with “sun.”

Materials:
·          One piece of orange and yellow construction paper
·          Tape
·          Scissors
·          Pen

Directions:
1.       Cut a circle out of the orange construction paper and set aside.
2.      Cut five strips out of the yellow paper to make the word strips. 
3.      Write the word “Sun” on the orange circle.
4.      On each yellow strip write the following, including the underscore:
                        a. /__un / __un / __un /__un / __un /
5.      Discuss with your child that they will be learning five new words that rhyme with the word “sun.”  Show them that the sound –un is repeated in every word to make the rhyming sound.
6.      Discuss the word “sun” with your child.  Use it in a sentence and spell the word together. 
7.      Now, add a letter to the front of each __un strip to make a new word.  Discuss each new word as you go along for further development.
                  a. /fun / run / bun /nun / stun /
8.      Next, place tape at the ends of each word strip.
9.      Have your child tape each word strip on the sun to make the sun rays!
10.  When finished, have your child talk about his sun and the words on it.  Add this great activity to a wall at home for your child to display! 

Learning Opportunity
1.                   Your child will learn how to make words that rhyme with “sun.”
2.                  Your child will practice their spelling skills during the activity.
3.                  Your child will practice their coordination while adding the rays to the sun.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Today’s activity was so much fun, as we really enjoy watching Stallone’s vocabulary grow.  Lessons like these are great ways to build word knowledge and vocabulary.  Stallone really enjoyed saying the rhyming words and his favorite was “run.”  He loved placing the sun rays on the sun.  He proudly showed his new sun to his mom and dad.

Kid’s Corner

{Week 4: Rhymes}

Activity: Making a May Poem by Briana

Theme: Blooming Days         Color: Purple

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
  2. Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 
Description:  Your child will learn words that rhyme with May and create a poem.

Materials:
·         White piece of paper {cut into four sentence strips}
·         Four index cards
·         Sharpe

Directions:
  1. Using the white paper cut four strips {landscape style} to create sentence strips for the poem.
  2. Write the following words below on each individual strip in order:
    1. Strip 1: This month it is _______,
    2. Strip 2: We are on our ________,
    3. Strip 3: To go outside and  ________,
    4. Strip 4: It is such a beautiful ________.
  3. On each index card write the follow words:
    1. May
    2. Way
    3. Play
    4. Day
  4. Lay out the four sentence strips {in order}.  Lay the four index cards below the strips.
  5. Discuss each index card word to your child:
    1. Explain how each word rhymes using the –ay chunk. 
    2. Discuss the meaning of each word.
    3. Spell out each word.
  6. Now, read the sentence strips with your child and have them fill in the blank with the correct rhyming word.
  7. Continue until all sentences are filled in correctly.
  8. Be sure to praise your child as they work on this activity with you.
  9. When finished, read the May Poem out loud together {this will replace the read aloud for the day}. 
 Learning Opportunity
  1. Your child will learn new words that rhyme with the word “May.”
  2. Your child will practice reading and spelling.
  3. Your child will gain confidence while completing the activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  This poem activity was a great lesson for Stallone today.  He enjoyed learning the new words that rhyme with “May” using the –ay chunk.  He had fun practicing his reading skills by reading each sentence strip.  He was so excited when he matched the correct word to fill in the poem.  When he was finished, he enjoyed reading the poem out loud with me.  This is a great lesson outline that you can apply to any poem you would like your child to practice.

Kid’s Corner

{Week 4: Rhymes}

Activity: Spring Caterpillar by Briana

Theme: Easter          Color: Grey

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
  2. Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 
Description:  Your child will learn how to create words that rhyme with the word spring.

Materials:
·         Three colors of construction paper
·         Scissors
·         Tape
·         Pen

Directions:
  1. Cut one large circle out of construction paper.  {Use large circle for the head of the caterpillar}
  2. Cut five smaller circles out of three colors of construction paper. 
  3. Cut two strips of paper out of the scraps to make the antennas.  Using tape, attach the antennas to the caterpillar’s head.
  4. Write the word “spring” on the caterpillar’s head and draw some eyes.
  5. With your child, think of five words that rhyme with spring:
    1. Thing / Ring / Wing / Bring / Sing.
  6. Write these words on the five circles.
  7. Discuss each word with your child:
    1.  Tell your child how the words rhyme with spring.
    2. Spell the words out together.
    3. Make sentences with the words.  
  8. After, have your child tape the circles to the caterpillar’s head to make the body.
  9. Have your child name the Spring Caterpillar and hang it up in the house to display his/her finished piece.

  2. Your child will practice spelling, reading, and making sentences.
  3. Your child will gain confidence while completing the activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone liked making the caterpillar today.  He enjoyed learning the new words that rhymed with spring.  He liked to say the words “thing” and “sing.” He loved putting the caterpillar together and seeing the finished piece!  He says “caterpillar” when he walks by his finished piece.  This is a fun activity to try with your kids!
