Activity:  Valentine Heart Fun {Lesson by Annie}

Description:  Your child will learn how to sort various “heart candies” by their colors and letters/words that appear on them.

Materials:
- A box of Sweetheart candies.
- Index Cards/White Computer Paper
- Sharpe or pen

Directions:
1. Using the index cards, write the words of the all different colors of candies in the box {use one card per color. If you do not have index cards, you can make them simply out of computer paper}.
      2. Place one of the cards out in front of the child, read the word to child and have them read it back to you. Have child trace with their index finger, the letters that make up the word {For example, the card showing might read RED, have child say RED, and trace the letters R-E-D}.
      3. Scatter the candy hearts on a clean surface in front of the child, have child sort through candy and pick out all the candies that match the color written on the index card.
      4. Count aloud all the candies that were sorted for that category.
      5. Once all colors are sorted and counted, place a new card out and have child sort out the new color. You can put more then one-index card out at a time, depending on how fast your child picks up on the activity.
      6. Letters/Words: Write down specific letters or words that are written on the hearts, repeat step 3 {For example, you could write the word LOVE, and the child can sort out all the hearts that have the word LOVE on them}.
      7. After activity, be sure to go over all the letters and words on the index cards, and reflect on the purpose of sorting while enjoying a few tasty hearts with your child!

Learning Opportunity
1. Your child will learn the basics to sorting.
2. Your child will learn/review the words that are associated with the activity.
3. Your child will practice counting aloud.
4. Your child will gain confidence in sorting, which will later benefit them in Kindergarten.

Stallone sorting away!

The activity today was another success, Stallone loved sorting the hearts to their proper colors, BUT....he loved eating them too! It took time, patients, and a few tears to teach a two year old, he had to wait until the activity was over before he could enjoy a few hearts! Nevertheless, we finished the activity in smiles while participating in a new learning experience!

Congratulations: You and your child finished the lesson for the day! What did you think about the lesson today, and what did your child learn?  We’d love to hear your thoughts!

*Stallone Tested and Approved: {We are so lucky to have Stallone, Annie’s son, test out all of our lessons that we create for you.  We want the lessons to be enjoyable for children, so after each lesson we will post how Stallone did with the lesson in italics under the title, Stallone Tested and Approved}:
