Kid’s Corner

{Week 4: Nutrition}

Activity: Apples by Briana

Theme: Fall Days         Color: Orange

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}

  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 
Description:  Your child will learn the nutritional facts of an apple.

Materials:
·         White and Green Construction Paper
·         Four White Index Cards
·         Scissors
·         Tape
·         Green or Red Crayons

Directions:
  1. Prep: Draw an outline of an apple on the white construction paper.
  2. Draw a leaf on the green construction paper.
  3. On the four index cards write the words: Vitamin C / Fiber / Vitamin A / Potassium
  4. Have your child color the apple.
  5. Have your child cut out the apple and the leaf using the scissors.
  6. Have your child tape the leaf onto the apple.
  7. Using the index cards, have your child tape each nutritional fact onto the apple.
  8. Discuss with your child the benefits of each nutritional fact. 
  9. When finished ask your child a variety of questions:
    1. What fruit is this?
    2. What color is your apple?
    3. What letter does apple start with?
    4. Do apples have vitamin C?
  10. When finished, display your child’s apple on the wall for the whole family to see!
 Learning Opportunity
  1. Your child will learn the nutritional facts of an apple.
  2. Your child will learn new words while completing the activity.
  3. Your child will gain confidence while completing the activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone loved making his apple today and learning about the nutritional facts of an apple.  He likes red apples, so he used the red crayon to color in his apple.  This was a great activity for him to practice his scissor skills.  After we completed the activity, he ate an apple for his afternoon snack!

{Week 4: Phonics}

Activity: D is for Dog by Briana

Theme: Fall Days         Color: Orange

Daily Opener:

Description:  Your child will learn the letter D by completing a creative activity.

Materials:
·         Brown and White Construction Paper
·         Scissors
·         Tape
·         Black, Brown, and Red Markers
·         Googly eyes {from craft store}.

Directions:
  1. Using scissors and the brown construction paper cut out the uppercase block letter D.
  2. Using the scissors and white construction paper, cut out two large raindrop shapes.  You will use these for the dog’s ears.
  3. Cut a strip of white paper and write the word “Dog” on it.
  4. Place all materials on the table for your child to use.
  5. Discuss with your child the word Dog and that it starts with the letter D.
  6. Next, have your child make the Dog:
  7. Have your child tape the googly eyes on the letter D.
  8. Then, add the ears.  Have your child tape the ears onto the D.
  9. Lastly, have your child draw the nose, tongue, and whiskers with the markers.
  10. When your child has created his/her Dog, ask your child a few questions:
    1. What sound does the letter D make?
    2. What sound does a dog make?
    3. What is the name of your Dog?
    4. What colors do you see?
    5. What other words start with the letter D?
  11. When finished, display your child’s D on the wall for the whole family to see!

  2. Your child will learn letter recognition while completing the activity.
  3. Your child will learn new words that start with the letter D.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone had a great time making his letter D and creating a dog today.  He has dogs at home, so he loved making his dog. He enjoyed saying the sound of the letter D, and saying other words that start with the letter D.  This is a great activity to practice your child’s phonics and phonemic awareness!

Draw and cut-out the block letter D and the ears.
Tape ears onto the letter D.  Place the word "Dog" underneath letter.

Daily Opener:

Description: Your child will practice matching lower case letters to their upper case letters.

Materials:
  • 27 Clothespins
  • Index Cards or Plain Paper
  • Sharpie


Directions:
1. Write one lower case letter per clothespin until the entire alphabet has been made.
2. Create a long strip of paper using index cards or paper and write the entire alphabet in all upper case letters {see image below}.
3. Lay the upper case letters on the ground in order with all clothespins {lower case letters showing}. Have your child clip the clothespin under the upper case letter, so that the upper case letter is matching the lower case letter.
4. Practice the sounds of each letter in the alphabet.
5.  Sing the ABC’s with your child pointing to each letter as it is pronounced. Shower your child with praise and encouragement for a job well done!
Learning Opportunity: 
1.             Your child will learn lower and upper case letters.
2.            Your child will practice phonics, by saying the sound of each letter.
3.            Your child will have gained confidence in the alphabet while completing this activity.

Stallone Tested & Approved: This activity lasted a good hour, Stallone loved clipping the clothespins to the correct letters. It took him a bit to get the hang of it, but he was quickly involved and had a blast doing it. He still get confused with the lower case b's and d's, so we will definitely be working on those again. As far as the sounds of the letters, that is currently his favorite phonetic activity! Super Fun, try it out!

Kid’s Corner

{Week 3: Science}

                      Activity: What's All the Fizz About?

Daily Opener:

Description: Your child will discover different colors while creating different patterns of fizziness.

Materials:
  • 13 by 9 Dish or Smaller
  • Food Coloring {Assortment of colors}
  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Medicine Dropper


Directions:
1. Cover the entire inside of the dish with baking soda.
2. For each color you have fill a cup up with a little vinegar and a few drops of food coloring, one cup per color.
3. Let the exploring begin! Using their medicine dropper, have child suction one color at a time and then squezzing liquid out onto the baking soda. Your child will love making patterns with the different coloring while hearing and seeing the colors fizz!
4.  Discuss with your child the following questions:
  • What do you hear and see?
  • What causes this to happen?
  • Have other colors been created by combining them?
5. Review today's science activity with child, ask questions to reassure comprehension. Take part in the activity again in the later days to come. :)

Learning Opportunity: 
1.             Your child will take part in a science activity using liquid and baking soda.
2.            Your child will discover colors, patterns, and reactions to the two chemicals being combined.
3.            Your child will have completed a science experience in which they will have gained confidence while exploring.

Stallone Tested & Approved: What a FUN, FUN, and FUN activity! You must try this! Thank you Pinterest for the great idea! Stallone would of sat there all day making "fizz" if he could! We will be doing this lots more times. It was educational asking him questions about the reaction of the vinegar and the baking soda and don't forget all the great colors involved. We mixed colors to make new colors like: orange, purple, and brown lol! Try this out, ;et us know what you think?

Daily Opener:

Description: Your child will learn the letter C by completing a creative activity.

Materials:
  • Two Paper Plates
  • Paint {Child’s choice of color}
  • Paint Brush
  • Black Marker
  • Scissors
  • Tape/Glue


Directions:
1. Cut out a large circle from the center of one paper plate and a medium circle from the center of the second plate {see images below}.
2. Cut out a curled tail and two small triangles from the remaining plate scraps {see images below}.
3. With the paint, have your child paint all the cut out pieces {paint the back side of the plate’s “ridged” pieces}, let sit to dry.
4.  Discuss with your child the word Cat and it starts with the letter C.
5.  Making the Cat: {see images below}
  • Have your child tape or glue the medium circle onto the top right side of the large circle.
  • Tape or glue the two triangles to the top of the medium circle.
  • Tape or glue the tail to the left side of large circle.
  • Draw cat eyes, nose, whiskers, and mouth on the center of the medium circle.
  • Your cat is done, turn side ways, as if the cat is walking up the tree to see the letter C!

6. When your cat is finished ask your child a few questions:
  • What sound does the C make?
  • What is the name of this animal?
  • What color do you see?
  • Can you name a few other words that start with the letter C?

7. When finished, display your child’s C on the wall for the whole family to see and enjoy!
Learning Opportunity: 
1.             Your child will practice matching the sound to the letter.
2.            Your child will learn letter recognition while completing this activity.
3.            Your child will learn new words that start with the letter C.

Stallone Tested and Approved: C is for Cat! Stallone has been into "phonics" lately, so any activity where we are practicing letters in always a "plus" in his book! What a fun activity today to take part in. I got the idea for the cat on the wonderful Pinterest and did a little tweaking and "waa laa" a perfect letter C activity!
