Kid’s Corner

{Week 5: Language}

Activity: Easter Chick
Lesson by Annie

Theme: Easter     Color: Gray

Daily Opener:  
1.             Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
2.            Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will practice learning various descriptive words involving an Easter Chick.

Materials:
  • Two Pieces of yellow and orange construction paper
  • Four Word Strips or White computer paper
  • Sharpie
  • Glue/Tape
  • Scissors

 Directions:
1.              Trace and cutout your child’s left and right hand on the yellow piece of paper.
2.             Draw and cutout a medium-size egg on the remaining yellow piece of paper.
3.             Draw and cutout two orange feet and a small diamond shape {see pictures below}.
4.            Cut out four word strips out of white computer paper.
5.             With your child put together your Easter Chick {see picture below}.
6.            With your child, using your four word strips, write the word: Chick on one of your word strips. Come up with three more descriptive words on the remaining word strips. Have your child trace over each word with their index finger and practice saying the word in a sentence.
7.            Review your words/sentences with your child and hang up your Easter Chick with its words around it for the days to come. Churp! Churp!

Learning Opportunity: 
1.             Your child will learn how to create an Easter Chick.
2.            Your child will learn descriptive words describing their chick.
3.            Your child will learn how to trace and say the new words.

Read Aloud: 
“This Little Chick”

This little chick is black. 

She stands in the barnyard on a big haystack.
This little chick is brown.

She is feeling sad and wearing a frown.
This little chick is yellow.

She's friends with the rooster; he's a handsome fellow.
This little chick is white.

She dances and plays, oh what a sight.
This little chick is purple.

She spends her day running around in a circle.
This little chick is green.

She is the prettiest chick I've ever seen.
This little chick is blue.

She lays eggs for me and you.
This little chick is pink.

She goes down to the pond to get a drink.
All of these chicks live at the farm,
Out in the big red barn.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  "It's a chick Momma, it's a chick!" Stallone yelled! He loved making his Easter Chick, and any activity where we are tracing his hands, he LOVES! The descriptive words were a lot of fun too, he didn't grasp the meaning of "descriptive words," but once I put it in simpler form he was quick to say, "Yellow, orange" and so on. Great activity!! We are sad to see our Easter Themed month come to an end. Hope you all enjoyed it!

{Week 4: Science}

Activity: Spring Sounds by Briana

Theme: Easter          Color: Grey

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}

  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 
Description:  Your child will explore and observe various sounds from different objects.

Materials:
·         Variety of objects {that make different sounds}
·         Paper
·         Pen

Directions:
  1. Write the word “Sounds” on the piece of paper.
  2. Set the objects on a table.
  3. Explain to your child that today he/she will be observing different sounds that objects can make.  
  4. Encourage your child to explore the objects by creating different sounds with them.
  5. Ask your child a variety of questions:
    1. Does the _____ {water bottle} make noise?  How did you get it to make noise?  Is it a loud noise?  It is a quiet noise? 
  6. After you and your child have explored and observed the objects and the noises they make, take a walk outside. 
  7. Ask your child what noises he/she hears outside.  Example: Birds, cars, lawn mowers, dogs, cats, ect.
  8. When you return from your walk, review with your child what he/she learned today.

  2. Your child will observe various sounds from different objects
  3. Your child will gain confidence while completing the activity.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone had a blast exploring the sounds that different objects make.  He really enjoyed shaking the oatmeal canister and hearing the keys make noise.  We practiced making loud sounds and making quiet sounds with the objects.  When we walked outside, he heard some birds and some cars.  It was a great science lesson today!

Kid’s Corner

{Week 4: Rhymes}

Activity: Spring Caterpillar by Briana

Theme: Easter          Color: Grey

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
  2. Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 
Description:  Your child will learn how to create words that rhyme with the word spring.

Materials:
·         Three colors of construction paper
·         Scissors
·         Tape
·         Pen

Directions:
  1. Cut one large circle out of construction paper.  {Use large circle for the head of the caterpillar}
  2. Cut five smaller circles out of three colors of construction paper. 
  3. Cut two strips of paper out of the scraps to make the antennas.  Using tape, attach the antennas to the caterpillar’s head.
  4. Write the word “spring” on the caterpillar’s head and draw some eyes.
  5. With your child, think of five words that rhyme with spring:
    1. Thing / Ring / Wing / Bring / Sing.
  6. Write these words on the five circles.
  7. Discuss each word with your child:
    1.  Tell your child how the words rhyme with spring.
    2. Spell the words out together.
    3. Make sentences with the words.  
  8. After, have your child tape the circles to the caterpillar’s head to make the body.
  9. Have your child name the Spring Caterpillar and hang it up in the house to display his/her finished piece.

  2. Your child will practice spelling, reading, and making sentences.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone liked making the caterpillar today.  He enjoyed learning the new words that rhymed with spring.  He liked to say the words “thing” and “sing.” He loved putting the caterpillar together and seeing the finished piece!  He says “caterpillar” when he walks by his finished piece.  This is a fun activity to try with your kids!

Kid’s Corner

{Week 4: Cooking}

Activity: Spring Strawberries by Briana

Theme: Easter          Color: Grey

Daily Opener:  
  1. Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}

  3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 
Description:  Your child will learn how to make chocolate covered strawberries.

Materials:
·         Strawberries {washed and pat dry}
·         Dipping Chocolate
·         Microwave safe bowl {For chocolate}
·         Sprinkles {optional}
·         Plate
·         Spoon

Directions:
  1. Set materials on the table.
  2. Pour some dipping chocolate into a bowl. 
  3. Have your child count how many chocolate pieces there are.
  4. Once you and your child have practiced counting, melt the chocolate in the microwave on thirty second intervals.  Be sure to stir in between to keep chocolate from burning.
  5. Now the fun part:  Have your child dip the strawberries into the chocolate.  Use the spoon to help cover the entire area.
  6. While the chocolate is still melted, have your child dip the coated strawberries into the sprinkles.
  7. When finished, lay the strawberries on a plate to cool.
  8. Before eating the strawberries, ask your child a few questions about what he/she made:
    1. How many strawberries do you see?
    2. What colors do you see on the sprinkled strawberries?
    3. Did you enjoy making them?
    4. What other fruit can we dip with chocolate?
  9. When finished, enjoy the strawberries for a fun springtime treat! 
Learning Opportunity
  1. Your child will learn how to make chocolate covered strawberries.
  2. Your child will practice their coordination while dipping the strawberries.
  3. Your child will practice their counting and observation skills.

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone was so excited to make his chocolate covered strawberries today!  He did great counting the chocolate pieces.  He had fun dipping the strawberries into the chocolate, and he kept saying “Strawberry…Yum!”  He liked telling us how many colors he could see on the sprinkled strawberries.  This is a fun and easy treat to make with your child, especially on a warm spring day!

Kid’s Corner

{Week 3: Opposites}

Activity: Inkblot Easter Egg

Theme: Easter     Color: Gray

Daily Opener:  
1.             Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
2.            Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will learn how to create an opposite pair while designing a colorful Easter egg.

Materials:

  • A piece of construction paper
  • Assortment of finger paints
  • Sharpie
  • Scissors

Directions:
1.              Fold your piece of construction paper in half, taco style {vertically}.
2.             Open fold, draw an egg on the paper, this egg should take up the entire paper 
3.             Painting time! Fold paper back, and have your child paint one side of the folded piece. The more paint the better!
4.            When painting is done, immediately open fold and fold over again once more, so dry fold will fold directly over the painted fold.
5.             Open fold, and you should have created an opposite pair. Explain to your child what an opposite pair means.
6.            Let dry, then cut out your Easter egg! Hang up for your child to enjoy for the days to come!

Learning Opportunity: 
1.             Your child will practice painting with a brush or fingers.
2.            Your child will learn how to create an opposite pair.
3.            Your child will learn how to make an Easter egg using paints.

Materials Needed

Fold paper in half

Draw a large egg

Prepare the paint

Fold in half, have child paint one half of the egg

Having fun painting!

Once painting is finished, fold painted side over non painted side and then open, you're child has created opposite pairs.

Let dry, and cut out egg template and WaaaLaaa!
