Activity Leaves {Lesson created by Annie}

Description:  Children will size/sort through various leaves, learning the difference between them all.

Materials:

Collected assorted leaves of all shapes and sizes (or you can cut out leaves using construction paper).

Directions:

      1. Sort leaves by their sizes: smallest to biggest.
Sort leaves by their colors: orange, brown, red, etc.
Sort leaves by their make: walnut tree, olive tree, pine tree etc.
     2. With each above bullet, make signs to represent each activity (Example: BIGGEST, ORANGE, WALNUT     TREE).
     3. With each bullet, sort the leaves next to their visual signs.  Name each leaf and it's category.  Then mix up leaves, and one-by-one have child place leaf next to its proper sign.  Do this with sizes, colors, and make
(Smallest to Biggest, have child line up leaves smallest to biggest).

Learning Opportunity: Science

1.  With a couple of leaves, have child name all three characteristics of each leaf. (Big, Orange, and it came from a walnut tree leaf).
2. Smallest to Biggest.  To end the lesson, have child line up leaves smallest to biggest. Take a piece of construction paper, using glue, show chid how to make small dots of glue on the backs of leaves, they can then glue to leaves onto the paper.

Poem: Falling Leaves

Leaves are falling
Falling to the ground.
See them gently twirl around
Dancing 'til they touch the ground.
Leaves are falling
Falling to the ground.

(Children can sing and dramatize to the poem).
