{Week 2: Art}

Daily Opener:

3. ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}.

Activity : “Footsy” the Reindeer {Lesson by Annie}   (Lesson inspired by: http://www.allkidsnetwork.com/crafts/animals/handprint-reindeer.asp). 

Description:  Children will create a Reindeer using the imprint of their foot and hands. This a great addition to the family Christmas tree for the years to come.

Materials:

Dark Brown Construction paper

Light Brown Construction paper

Two plastic craft eyes

Red cotton ball

Glue

Scissors

*The eyes and cotton ball can be substituted by just simply hand drawing it, and plain white paper will work by just coloring in the colors recommended.

Directions

1. Using the dark brown construction paper, trace your child’s right and left hand.

2. Using the light brown construction paper, trace your child’ s foot, either right or left.

3.  Cut out tracings.

4. Glue the left and right hand on the top of the foot (toe area), gluing the hands behind the foot. The hands will   resemble the reindeer’s antlers, the foot the face

5. Let dry for 5 minutes.

6.  Glue on eyes and cotton ball on the “foot area” to look like a “reindeer’s face.”

7. Don’t forget to write your child’s name and date on the back of reindeer, so you can enjoy it for the years to come. 

·      *You can also, hole punch it and loop and tie a piece of yarn through it, so it can be displayed on the Christmas tree as an ornament. 

Learning Opportunity:

1.  Count the number of fingers on the antlers.

2.  Distinguish the two colors of browns that were used, “dark” and “light."

3. Sing the famous “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” song.

Stallone really enjoyed this lesson.  He had such a fun time putting together his reindeer.  He thought is was really neat to trace his hands and foot.  We put the reindeer on the refrigerator and he loves to point it out! This activity was really crafty and fun!

Activity: Christmas Tree Rock {Lesson by Briana}

Description: Your child will practice coordination by movign to the holiday song "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree."

Materials:

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree Song by Brenda Lee

Directions:

1.    Teach your child any move you would like him/her to repeat.  Examples: Clapping hands, jumping up and down, wiggling hips side to side. 

2.  Turn on the song "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" and have your child listen to it.  Sing along with the song.

3.   Next, play the song again and have your child move and dance to the music by your Christmas tree.

4.     Repeat as many times as you would like.

Learning Opportunity:

1.   Your child will learn the words to the song "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree"

2. Your child will practice coordination by moving to the song.

3. Your child will gain confidence while dancing to the song.

Stallone had a great time dancing to the song.  I had him clap his hands and move his hips from side to side.  It was great coordination practice for him.  He sang along to the song and had a lot of fun!

Activity: Christmas Ornament {Lesson by Briana}

Description: Your child will gain confidence by making a Christmas ornament.

Materials:

Green construction paper

Glue

Buttons

Green felt

Photo of your child.

Ribbon

Directions:

1. Cut a circle out of construction paper, felt, and your child’s photo. {Make sure your circles match}.
2. Cut a circle in the center of the felt.  This will make a “wreath” shape, and make room for your child’s photo.
3. Glue picture onto the green construction paper.
4. Have your child count all of the buttons.  Then, have your child glue buttons onto the felt wreath.
5. Glue the felt wreath on top of the green construction paper.
6. Finally, loop ribbon around the wreath and tie a bow at the top to secure it.
7. Praise your child and tell them how great of a job they did.
8. Make the ornament super special by having the child place it onto your Christmas tree. 
9. Have your child show the whole family their special ornament they made.

Learning Opportunity:

1. Your child will practice their counting with the buttons.
2. Your child will gain confidence by making the ornament.
3. Your child will gain self esteem when they place their special ornament onto the tree for everyone to see!
4. Your child will gain independence while making their special ornament.

We did not have all the materials recommended, so we compromised and used the items in our house we had.  We encourage you all to make way with the materials you have in your house. This is a perfect example. It was a great activity, and Stallone points out his ornament on the tree to my husband and I almost everyday, he is so proud!

Title: Christmas Tree {Lesson by Briana}

Description: Children will create four sentences with the word Tree.

Materials:

Green and brown construction paper

4 sentence strips out of white computer paper

Glue or tape

Sharpe

Directions:

1.      Make a tree out of green and brown construction paper.

2.    Make sentence strips. Write the word or words and cut out in strips:

a.     1^st strip: Write: Tree  {One word sentence strip}

b.    2^nd strip: Write: _______  Tree.  {2 word sentence strip}.

c.     3^rd strip: Write: The ______ Tree {3 word sentence strip}.

d.    4^th strip:  Write: The ______, ______ Tree. {4 word sentence strip}.

3.     Brainstorm with our child what word or words you can put in to fill in the blank and make a sentence.  Ask your child questions such as, “What do you see?”  “What color is the tree?”  What size is the tree?”  These questions will help you and your child make words to fit into the sentence strips.

4.    Write in the word for each sentence strip.

5.     Have your child tape or glue the sentence strips one at a time, to create a pyramid shape that will fit perfectly onto the tree. The first sentence strip will go at the top of the tree, second sentence strip will go right under it.  The 3^rd and 4^th sentence trip follow.

6.    When you and your child finish, read all of the sentences out loud. 

7.     Hang the finished project on the wall to show your child’s work to the family.

Learning Opportunity:

1.      Your child will learn the word tree.

2.     Your child will learn sentences structure.

3.      Your child will practice learning how to read.

4.     Your child will develop confidence by learning to read.

Stallone really enjoyed making his Christmas tree.  He had a blast making sentences and learning to read them and listen to them.  He was excited to show everyone his tree!  This is a great holiday activity!
