Kid’s Corner

{Week 4: Rhymes}

Activity: Pot of Gold Rhymes

Theme: St. Patrick’s Day       Color: Green

Daily Opener:  
1.             Prayer {Say a prayer with your child}
2.            Calendar {Click on the link to learn how to use the calendar}.
3.      ABC / 123 Song {Sing the ABC’s with your child & sing numbers 1-10 with your child}. 

Description:  Your child will learn rhyming words related to St. Patrick’s Day's Pot of GOLD!

Materials:

·      Black and Yellow Construction Paper
·      Sharpe/Marker
·      Tape/Glue
·      Scissors


Directions:
1.             Describe the signifigance of a “pot of gold” to your child: they are found at the end of a rainbow, there is an abundant amount of gold, gold is worth a lot of money, and Lephrechans protect the gold.
2.            Trace and cut out a LARGE pot from your black construction paper.
3.            Trace and cut out a medium rectangle to go across your pot, using the sharpe write, “Pot of GOLD.”
4.            Using the remaining yellow paper, cut out a handful of medium size circles that will represent “gold” pieces {circles should be BIG enough to write words on them}.
5.             With your child, write the following rhyming words on the “gold coins,” we will be rhyming words that rhyme with “GOLD:” BOLD, COLD, OLD, and SOLD.
6.             Discuss that the following words rhyme with GOLD, and that they all have the same “old” ending.
7.             Have your child trace each word with their index finger.
8.       Together tape or glue your gold coins to your pot, creating your new St. Patrick’s Day Pot of Gold!

Learning Opportunity: 
1.             Your child will learn how to identify, spell, and pronounce rhyming words associate with GOLD.
2.            Your child will practice spelling the words by tracing over each new word using their index finger.
3.            Your child will learn facts about a pot of gold.

Read Aloud:  

I'm a little leprechaun 

Dressed in green 

The tiniest man that you have ever seen. 

If you ever catch me, 

So it's told, 

I'll give to you my pot of gold.

Pot, cut out of black construction paper

Gold Coins, traced the circles with a large drinking cup

Pot of GOLD, ready for some gold!

*Stallone Tested and Approved:  Stallone has caught onto the meaning of rhyming pretty well for a 26 month old. As we were rhyming with the word"Gold," he started rhyming words to the word, "Cake." It was really funny and a definite proud Mommy moment! Hope you enjoy rhyming St. Patrick's style today!
