Activity:  Freezing Discovery {Lesson by Briana}

Description:  Children will learn how water can freeze.

Materials:
-          2 plastic water bottles
-          water
-          Index card size paper with word “Liquid” written on it.
-          Index card size paper with word “Frozen” written on it.
-          {Optional: An early morning walk to discovery frost}.

Directions:
-          Before starting the lesson, you can take your child for an early morning walk or quick visit outside to discover some water that has frozen from the chilly temperatures.  Where we live, there is frost on our roofs, grass, and gutters around 8am right now, so if you live in a frosty area, feel free to take a quick visit outside. If not, this is no problem and you can skip this step.
o       If you go for a walk outside, point out the water that is frozen.  Then head inside to start the lesson.
-          Discuss what the word “Freeze” means.  Tell your child that water can freeze when it is 32 degrees Fahrenheit and below.
-          Fill up both of your plastic water bottles with water.
-          Tape the “Liquid” paper onto one bottle, and the “Frozen” paper onto the second bottle.
-          Have your child place the “Frozen” bottle into the freezer.  Tell your child that the freezer can get to 32 degrees.
-          Tell your child you will check on the water bottle in a few hours.
-          After the water bottle has frozen, have your child remove it from the freezer {they will be really excited to see what happens}.
-          Place both bottles on the counter and have your child “discover” what they see.
o       Discuss with your child want you see by asking them and helping them answer some questions on their level:
§         What happened to the water to the “frozen” bottle?  Is it “frozen” or is it “liquid”?
§         What is the same about the bottle {Both have water}
§         What is different {The Frozen water is hard/solid and the other one is runny/ liquidy}.
-          At the end, have your child sip some water out of the “Liquid” bottle and try sipping some water out of the “frozen” bottle.

Learning Opportunity:
-Your child will learn the words “Freeze/Frozen” means.
-Your child will discover water that is frozen outside.
-Your child will discover how water can freeze.
-Your child will learn the difference between water that is liquid and water that is frozen.

Freezing {By Briana}

It is 32 degrees,
Can’t you see,

It is 32 degrees,
Look, the water is as frozen as can be,

It is 32 degrees,
Can’t you see,

It is 32 Degrees,
It is time for some warm tea,

It is 32 degrees,
Can’t you see,

It is 32 Degrees
That means it is Freezing!

*Stallone Tested and Approved: {We are so lucky to have Stallone, Annie’s son, test out all of our lessons that we create for you.  We want the lessons to be enjoyable for children, so after each lesson we will post how Stallone did with the lesson in italics under the title, Stallone Tested and Approved}:

Stallone really loved the science lesson!  He was excited to see what the water bottle looked like in the freezer.  After a few hours, he picked the water bottle out of the freezer himself.  He was very amazed by the transition of liquid to frozen solid.  Another great lesson that is Stallone tested and approved!
